Hang Lung Properties - Go the Extra Mile in Talent Management

16 Jul 2018

Hang Lung Properties, a leading property developer in Hong Kong, has long upheld the "We Do It Right" philosophy that extends beyond its core business and embraces the initiatives it undertakes for talent development, a sustainable environment and the community. The Company sees its people-focused policies as the fundamental to its success, which also enables it to be the employer of choice.

We Do It Right

Hang Lung Properties has been honoured with the Employer of Choice Award presented by Job Market for four consecutive years, while it also won the Corporate Sustainability Award in regards of its commitment in sustainability. Janet Poon, General Manager - Human Resources expressed her gratitude to the public for the recognition of the Company's continual efforts in fostering talent management and development. "For years, Hang Lung Properties has adopted innovative talent management strategies to ensure a respectful, harmonious and safe work environment and provide the necessary training opportunities for our people. We have insisted in our ”„We Do It Right' philosophy to do the right thing that best fits our people's need," Poon said.

At present, the total number of staff at Hang Lung Properties in both Hong Kong and Mainland is approaching 5,000. The Company often cares for its people, whom it considers to be the most precious asset. "We strongly believe that our staff deserve the opportunity to grow with the company. Professional training enhances staff value and operational efficiency. This is no doubt a win-win for both the Company and the people," Poon added. To facilitate continuous professional development, Hang Lung Properties offers its staff various opportunities to refine existing skills and master new ones to achieve their career goals, ranging from in-house and external training programs to job rotation and secondments across departments and offices.

Sustainable Development

Hang Lung Properties understands very well the significance of sustainable development. According to Poon, there are five areas in the Company's vision and mission in terms of sustainability - Sound Governance, Sustainable Buildings, Green Operation, Employer of Choice and Community Integration.

In 2012, Academy 66 was founded to provide all-rounded learning opportunities and training classes for staff at all levels within the organisation. The four major training topics in the Learning and Development function include Organisational Development, Training and Development, Leadership and Human Resources Development, and IT for Learning. Poon explained, "Different customer service programs are designed for frontline staff, which cover customer service knowledge and skills, while tailor-made management programs are provided for supervisors. For managerial staff, they can participate in extensive management programs jointly organised by the Company and Tsinghua University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. These programs enrich their professional knowledge in management and leadership"

Keeping pace with the times, Hang Lung Properties aims to maintain its competitive edge with the use of the latest technology. The Company has launched the EST scheme (Experience, Service and Technology) to be applied on strategic planning and daily operation. Since 2013, an e-learning platform was created for staff to flexibly engage in a wide variety of training via cell phones and computers anytime, anywhere. The Company also frequently uses social media platforms such as Facebook and LinkedIn to announce Company updates for stronger bonding between the employees and the community. In Mainland, a Wechat platform is also adopted for mainland staff to express their opinions and receive company information.

Poon revealed that Hang Lung Properties shows its commitment to corporate social responsibility by creating social value. The "Hang Lung As One Volunteer Team" positively participates in social activities to promote youth development, environmental protection, elderly support, etc. In 2017, over 100 activities were held, representing over 12,000 hours of service.

Employer Branding is Key

Whether for attracting new talent or retaining top talent, Hang Lung Properties has put continuous effort in providing on-the-job training to its people, while it values opinions from its people as well. Eva Li, Head of Talent Management said that such practice not only increasing job satisfaction, but also enhancing the effect of organisational management, resulted in good employer branding, which is not built by advertising, but every member of the entire staff. "Hang Lung Properties offers a robust benefit system to its staff and their families, for example medical benefits, health checks, paternity leave and marriage leave. We also set up ”„Chan Tseng- Hsi Foundation' to subsidise staff's children to enroll on full-time degree programs in local or overseas certified tertiary institutions," Li continued.

Work-life Balance

Hang Lung Properties is very conscious of employee wellness. To strike a balance between work and life, the Company develops a Staff Wellness Program that comes with various health activities for stress relief. "We strive to promote a healthy and stressfree working environment. The Wellness Day offers staff health checks and professional advice from registered Chinese medicine practitioners, physiotherapists, nutritionists and aromatherapists, while a counseling hotline ensures that all staff and their families are never alone when they need someone to talk to," she added.

The Emerald Award

The working environment at Hang Lung Properties is finetuned to empower employees to excel. To encourage frontline staff to "Go the Extra Mile", the Company set up the Emerald Award to make sure that due recognition is given to staff with excellent performance.

Hui Ching Yiu, Guest Service Supervisor and his fellow, were awarded with Emerald Award in 2017 to highlight their great work. Hui thanked for the recognition from the Company, "the award really gives us a boost! We are so blessed to be able to work in a positive and stress-free working environment and receive professional training that facilitates us to better ourselves and learn to serve our valuable customers with all our hearts."
