The Greater China Talent Management
Summit 2014, organised by A-Performers.com, is
now in its 9th year. This conference has been
well received among human resources professionals
throughout the greater China region as an effective
platform to share insights, knowledge and tools
on talent management. In today's era of rapid
change, we are facing a host of different problems
and challenges never before experienced or even
imagined. The Greater China Talent Management
Summit 2014 will focus on the study of the pivotal
role of people leadership in organisations to
ensure future success.
HR experts, as the champions of people leadership,
must understand the strategic issues that drive
their business and strike a balance between being
an employee advocate and being a strategic contributor.
They must also be able to manage the changes taking
place outside of the organisation and mirror the
changes inside it. In fact, HR professionals need
to be seen as much more than a supporting function
and instead must be viewed as integral to the
organisation's change management strategy.
In this issue, several heavyweight speakers at
the Summit share their in-depth views on people
leadership. Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, Secretary
for Labour and Welfare of the HKSAR, emphasises
the importance of collaboration between the Government
and the private sector to leverage the potential
of today's younger workforce while at the same
time valuing the contributions of those employees
approaching retirement age, all in order to ease
the labour shortage challenges that plague Hong
Kong.
While change is unavoidable in today's dynamic
business era, Joe Ngai, director and managing
partner of the McKinsey's Hong Kong office, stresses
that the role of a human resources expert should
be taken to new levels in order to identify true
leadership qualities and to nurture the potential
of young talents.
With respect to human resources managing, Steve
Chow, managing director of TMS Consulting, adopts
a "back to basics" principle, which is illustrated
in a model that features the delivery of quantifiable
values in all HR aspects of a company.
Henry Chamberlain, the immediate past president
of the Hong Kong Psychological Society and founder
of his own consultancy firm, highlights the importance
of psychometric test, a standardised assessment
method to objectively measure cognitive ability
and personal traits through the use of numerical
scales or category systems. Compared to traditional
personnel selection methods, Chamberlain believes
that psychometrics can provide a more accurate
measure of job relevant capabilities.
A softer approach is taken by Dr. Christine Lai,
the founder and CEO of Heart Consultancy Ltd.
She is a strong advocate of a holistic and humanistic
talent strategy to allow employees to become self-motivated
in a workplace environment that pays respect for
diversity, wellness and the engagement of the
body, mind and soul.
Other prestigious speakers will also share their
thoughts on issues related to people management
and how they are aligned with organisational successes.
They include Carmen Lam, CEO of Principal Global
Investors and PrinCorp Wealth; Iris Cheng, senior
human resources manager at CLP Power; Glenn Dittrich,
director at IBM; and Dr. Paul Sin, CIO and executive
director at BancLogix. Their insights are sure
to inspire everyone.

The Government and private sector collaborate
to ease the labour shortage
Thanks to continuous economic development and
prosperity over the years, Hong Kong is today
one of the very few places across the globe that
enjoys a very low unemployment rate. Despite this,
labour shortages and an ageing population are
posing other challenges to many businesses that
necessarily affect their operations and increase
overall labour costs. To address these issues,
companies need to attract a new and younger workforce
on the one hand while also trying to retain veteran
employees.....
